چکیده

The social environment can play an important role in organizing organisms’ behavioural development. We studied the effect on adult male cowbirds’ communication and matingrelated behaviour of being housed in social groups with juvenile males. In two large outdoor aviaries, we housed adult males, juvenile females and adult females either with or without juvenile males. Conditions remained intact from September 1999 through the Ž rst half of the breeding season in May 2000. We observed them throughout this time, documenting singing interactions, patterns of afŽ liation, and song production. We then brought the two groups of adult males together by rotating individuals from the groups into a mating competency tournament, allowing the males to compete with each other for mating opportunities with a new group of females. Throughout the study prior to the mating competency test, there were few differences among adult males in the two conditions as measured by amount and use of song, the quality of their songs, or number of copulations they received. In the mating competency tournament however, signiŽ cant differences among males in the two conditions emerged. Compared with adult males that had been housed without juvenile males, adult males that had formerly been housed with juvenile males were more successful in the mating competition as measured by: success in getting copulations, number of copulations received, and latency to get copulations. They also engaged in more male-male singing interactions. These results provide evidence to suggest that development of mating competency is malleable throughout life in response to the social environment that individuals experience.

Social Malleability in Cowbirds (Molothrus ater artemisiae): Species and Mate Recognition in the First 2 Years of Life

In a longitudinal study, the authors housed wild-caught juvenile male cowbirds (Molothrus ater artemisiae) with female cowbirds or canaries (Serinus canaria) from August until May. The males were then exposed to 3 social contexts. Males housed with canaries directed more vocalizations to canaries than to female cowbirds. Males housed with female cowbirds vocalized most to other males. The data ...

Uncovering sources of variation in female sociality: Implications for the development of social preferences in female cowbirds (Molothrus ater)

The purpose of this study was to investigate variation in female cowbird (Molothrus ater) sociality. We studied four captive flocks of brown-headed cowbirds, two composed of adult females and juvenile males and two composed of juvenile females and juvenile males. From September through December, we documented sociality using affiliation measures. From the outset, we found large age differences:...

Facultative development of courtship and communication in juvenile male cowbirds (Molothrus ater)

We investigated effects of naturally occurring variation in experience with adult males on development of song and courtship competence in captive juvenile cowbirds. We studied birds in groups housed in large outdoor aviaries that allowed birds to regulate access to social stimulation. In two aviaries, we housed juvenile males and females either with or without adult males. Birds remained in th...

The presumption of sociality: social learning in diverse contexts in brown-headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater).

Data are presented on social and vocal learning in cowbirds (Molothrus ater) housed in large aviaries and given more degrees of freedom than in conventional experimental studies. The studies show that social and vocal outcomes are facultative responses to social contexts. Several findings are reviewed: First, cowbirds quickly self-organize into groups by age and sex; second, opportunities to in...

Atypical Song Reveals Spontaneously Developing Coordination between Multi-Modal Signals in Brown-Headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater)

The courtship and dominance behavior of brown-headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater) consists of a multi-modal display, including song as well as postural and wing movements. The temporal sequences of the acoustic and the visual display are coordinated. In adult male cowbirds the largest wing movements of the display are synchronized with silent periods of song, but it is unknown how this coordinatio...
